Open Question: Cape Hatteras camping?

Me and some friends want to go to Cape Hatteras and camp on the beach for a couple of nights but I'm not really sure what to expect. Will I be able to drive the whole way to the camping? I also herd that it was free. Is this true? Any pointers on things that we should bring, or know of before we go would be great. Also things that we could do while we are down there. Thanks!
