Apoc Neoshell Jacket from Westcomb

At the intersection of breath ability, waterproofing, and lightweight material lies the holy grail of outer wear. It's the quest for that fabric that brought us Gore-Tex and Triple Point Ceramic and any number of branded fabric names.

Now there's NeoShell by Polartec, a breathable waterproof fabric that claims to be "100% more breathable than the best waterproof breathable on the market in active conditions". Westcomb, a Canadian outerwear company is using NeoShell for their not yet on the market Apoc jacket, and at first blush, it looks to be good stuff. Here's a little more propaganda, directly from the NeoShell site:

Waterproof technology has remained about the same since the very first hard shell. Breathability is achieved through diffusion: moisture and heat create enough pressure that moisture vapor finally passes through the fabric.

Soft shells trade waterproofness for greater breathability by making use of convection: a constant exchange of air allows more moisture vapor to escape. Now, Polartec(R) NeoShell(R) delivers the best of both worlds.

I noticed the difference in weight right away -- the Apoc is absolutely a few ounces lighter than my Goretex shell, I could feel it. The fabric is slightly softer, slightly smoother, it's got a little bit more drape. The jacket folds up to very small; you can easily stuff it in your pack or suitcase.

There's just one thing missing from this very nice jacket. I prefer two way zippers, that way you can open the jacket from the bottom, too. That's all I've got for criticism -- I like everything else, the feel of the fabric, the cut of the jacket, the sharp acid green color. Don't want the green? You can get it in blue, gray, red, yellow, or black.

The rest of the Apoc jacket shows a really nice attention to detail. There are deep zippered pockets for your stuff. There's a bicep pocket for your lift ticket or lip balm. There's an inside pocket for your wallet and phone; it includes a pass-through for your headsets. All the seams are taped and lie flat. My favorite detail is that the collar is lined with a very light, fleecy material where it hits your face when it's zipped all the way up.

Pair this jacket with a lightweight down sweater or shirt, and you are set for almost any weather. It's not on retail racks yet, look for it as the the 2011 summer wanes.

Apoc Neoshell Jacket from Westcomb originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Gulfstream G450 crosses the Atlantic on 50/50 biofuel-jetfuel blend

With the rising price of fuel and more stringent emissions regulations, there is a strong need for the aviation industry to begin taking steps to earn its green wings. It's not surprising therefore that biofuel was one of the hot topics at this week's Paris Air Show with both Boeing's 747-8 and Gulfstream's G450 business jet making the trip across the Atlantic on biofuel blends. The G450 flew in from Morristown, New Jersey, after a seven hour flight in which one of its Rolls-Royce engines was powered by a 50/50 blend of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel and petroleum-based jet fuel... Open Question: Best Rain Suit for Bug Out Bag?

I have been slowly adding to my Bug Out Bag over the past few months. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug-out_bag.

What is the best possible "rain suit" or poncho I can get?

What is a moderately priced rain suit that is still quality?

Is having a rain suit, or whatever it's called, in my BOB a good investment?

If not, what do you recommend? Just a cheap poncho?

I'm thinking for situations as drastic as war, evasion, natural disaster..........but also simpler times like when my car breaks down and it's raining heavily.

Any advice would be great guys thanks!

Air purifiers: What they could, can, and can't accomplish

In the quest to feel healthy, hold off on buying that air purifier and do your homework. Namely, read our latest report on air purifiers. Some so-called "air cleaners" do basically nothing to clean the air, while some claim to protect you against everything from H1N1 (swine flu) to secondhand smoke. Others, most notably the ones we single out as the Best Reviewed air cleaners, do a fantastic job filtering out dust and pollen in independent tests.

In-House Camping ? Sometimes You?ve Just Gotta Go For It!

Okay, Mother Nature. We admit defeat. Torrential rains and gale force winds have put a damper on our much anticipated two-week camping trip. Oh well, we?ll just have to improvise! This is the first time we?ve given in to the weather but ? all is not lost. Sometimes you?ve just gotta go for it!

After a great deal of discussion, my husband and I decided to set up camp in our dining room. We moved the dining room furniture into the living room (in front of the TV so we wouldn?t be tempted to watch anything during our ?holiday?) and pitched the tent. We had to use one of our smaller tents because of the tight fit but it was perfect nonetheless. While listening to a ?waves-crashing-on-the-shore-and-birds-twittering? CD on the portable radio, we set our camp chairs up in front of the fireplace and started our ?camp fire? with store-bought wood. I know, I know, it?s against true camping rules to buy wood but this was an emergency situation! We did our breakfast toast over the fire but decided to cook our meals on the barbecue out back. (We live in a townhouse and I think that the strata council frowns on cooking meat in the fireplace.)

My husband and I both found this whole experience a little challenging at first. Unplugging the TV and the computers, ignoring the phone and not picking up the mail felt weird. After a couple of days, though, it felt just fine. And I have to admit, a big plus to camping in-house is that, if you have to get up in the night, the bathroom is just down the hall! Actually, we really enjoyed being unplugged for a few days. It was good to catch up with our reading and reconnect with each other. For us, it was almost as good as if we were really outdoors camping. For our dog, because we don?t have a lake for her to swim in or chipmunks for her to case in our house ? not so much! Anyway, when all was said and done, I figure that this in-house camping was the next best thing to the real deal.

However, I have to confess that we have now put a camper on the top of our wish list! One day?
