Open Question: What survival knife should I purchase?

i need a knife for camping. i pretty much narrowed it down to the cold steel recon scout or the bigger trail master. i like the size of the trail master, but i have some issues. is the extra size going to limit the ability to woodwork with things? also i don't know why they changed the blade on the newer models. i would the older blade that is identical to the one on the recon scout, just a bigger blade. do you know anything about this? also i don't like the sheath at all on the trail master, but i love the sheath on the recon scout. i heard people say that you can get a custom sheath. does anyone have more information on this? also, how much would something like this, a quality hard plastic (preferably friction fit) sheath cost? i know i'm running this on with A LOT of questions, but i need a knife i can baton with, carve wood to make such things as a bow spindle or even sticks to roast marshmallows. by the way, i live in alaska if that helps at all.
