Light bulb technology continues to evolve, providing new alternatives as incandescent light bulbs are phased out across the United States. While compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are a popular choice, they're not as energy-efficient as LED light bulbs. Nor do most CFL bulbs fare well in rendering color as accurately as incandescent bulbs, which score a perfect 100 on the Color Rendering Index (CRI).
Many CFL bulbs, even when described as "warm white," emit an odd spectrum that can be greenish and off-putting. Disposal of CFL bulbs is another problem, since they contain mercury and are not supposed to be put into ordinary household trash. A few other options are worth considering.
